Classification of Rubber

1. By Raw Material Source and Production Method

Rubber can be divided into two categories: natural rubber and synthetic rubber.

  • Natural rubber accounts for 1/3 of total consumption.
  • Synthetic rubber accounts for 2/3 of total consumption.

2. By Appearance and Form

Rubber can be classified into four categories based on its physical state:

  • Solid rubber (also known as dry rubber)
  • Emulsion rubber (referred to as latex)
  • Liquid rubber
  • Powder rubber

3. By Performance and Application

Excluding natural rubber, synthetic rubber can be further divided into:

  • General-purpose synthetic rubber
  • Semi-general-purpose synthetic rubber
  • Special-purpose synthetic rubber
  • Specialty synthetic rubber

4. By Physical Properties

Rubber can be categorized by its physical form:

  • Hard rubber and soft rubber
  • Raw rubber and compounded rubber

Industrial Classification by Function (Heat Resistance, Oil Resistance, etc.)

Based on rubber type and cross-linking form, industrial rubber is often classified by functional properties:

  • Ordinary rubber
  • Heat-resistant rubber
  • Oil-resistant rubber
  • Weather-resistant and aging-resistant rubber
  • Rubber resistant to special chemical media
